Implant also in me a love for Thy blessed commandments. Grant me the grace to overcome all my carnal desires, so that I may enter more completely into a spiritual manner of living, both thinking and doing such things as are well pleasing to Thee. For Thou art the illumination of our souls and bodies, O Christ our God, and unto Thee do we ascribe glory, together with Thine all-holy, good and life-creating Spirit; now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

On the Night of Nativity.

Pure is the present night, in which the Pure One appeared, Who came to purify us! Let our hearing be pure, and the sight of our eyes chaste, and the feeling of the heart holy, and the speech of the mouth sincere!

The present night is the night of reconciliation; therefore, let no one be wroth against his brother and offend him!

This night gave peace to the whole world, and so, let no one threaten. This is the night of the Most Meek One; let no one be cruel!

This is the night of the Humble One; let no one be proud!

Now is the day of joy; let us not take revenge for offences! Now is the day of good will; let us not be harsh. On this day of tranquility, let us not become agitated by anger!

Today God came unto sinners; let not the righteous exalt himself over sinners!

Today the Most Rich One became poor for our sake; let the rich man invite the poor to his table!

Today we received a gift which we did not ask for; let us bestow alms to those who cry out to us and beg!

The present day has opened the door of heaven to our prayers; let us also open our door to those who ask of us forgiveness!

Today the Godhead placed upon Himself the seal of humanity, and humanity has been adorned with the seal of the Godhead!

Poco antes del nacimiento del Salvador, el emperador romano Augusto ordenó que se hiciera un censo general de toda la población. Entre los hebreos, los registros se llevaban por tribus, pueblos y por lugares de nacimiento, y cada uno de ellos tenía determinados sus propias ciudades y aldeas donde se guardaban los registros genealógicos. En vista de que Belén era el lugar de nacimiento del rey David, es que se la consideraba como la ciudad de su familia y de todos sus descendientes.

No cabe ninguna duda que no fue sin la intervención de la Providencia Divina que fue dictado el edicto del César que ordenaba la reinscripción de toda la población, ya que Jesucristo debía nacer en Belén, y no en Nazaret donde residía en ese entonces la Virgen María. Así es como lo predijo el profeta Miqueas: "Y tú, Belén, tierra de Judá, en nada eres menor a los capitanes de Judá, porque de ti saldrá un Guía, que apacentará a mi pueblo Israel" (Miqueas 5:2). La Santísima Virgen María, era huérfana total, y como única heredera del nombre y de los bienes patrimoniales de su familia, al igual que todos los hombres, también estaba sujeta a realizar la reinscripción. Encontrándose en los últimos días de Su embarazo, debía ir junto con su pariente-tutor, el anciano José, a su ciudad natal, Belén, para cumplir con la ordenanza del censo.

Tomando en cuenta el estado de la Virgen María, el viaje desde Nazareth a Belén podía llegar a prolongarse alrededor de tres días de camino. Cuando llegaron allí, la Virgen María con José, no pudieron encontrar ningún lugar para hospedarse, debido a la gran cantidad de gente que había arribado para cumplir con el censo. Habiendo encontrado cerca de Belén una gruta, donde los pastores metían su ganado cuando el tiempo era inclemente, y por no tener otro lugar donde albergarse, José y la Purísima Virgen se ubicaron en ella. La gruta estaba vacía, ya que por causa del buen tiempo reinante, los pastores se quedaron con sus ovejas en el campo.

Y así, en esta humilde caverna, apartados de todos, durante el silencio de la noche, la Virgen María sin dolencia alguna, y sin ayuda ajena, dio a luz a nuestro Señor Jesucristo — al Salvador prometido para el mundo. Tomando en cuenta las profecías de Isaías (Is. 7:14), la Iglesia Ortodoxa enseña, que no solo la concepción del Salvador fue sobrenatural, sino que también durante el nacimiento, y aun después del milagroso nacimiento del Niño, Su Madre permaneció Virgen, en cumplimiento de la promesa de virginidad que había hecho. Según las tradiciones hebreas, el Mesías debía nacer en el mes "quisleve" — el noveno mes de acuerdo al cálculo hebreo, y según nuestro calendario — en Diciembre. Aunque la fecha exacta del Nacimiento no se conoce, este acontecimiento comenzó más adelante a celebrarse por la Iglesia el 25 de Diciembre.

Después de dar a luz al Divino Niño, al Dios-Hombre, al Salvador del mundo, Jesucristo, la Madre de Dios, por si Misma Lo tomó en Sus manos, Lo envolvió en pañales y Lo puso en un pesebre, que había excavado en la gruta para dar alimento al ganado. Las devotas tradiciones complementan el relato Evangélico, diciendo que también se encontraban allí un buey y un asno, los cuales, estando al lado del pesebre, calentaban con su aliento al Divino Niño, que reposaba en él.

A esas horas de la medianoche, Belén y sus alrededores estaban sumergidos en un profundo sueño. Sólo en esta humilde gruta había animación: la Madre de Dios y el justo José estaban diligentes ante el Recién Nacido. En el campo, en las cercanías de la gruta había rebaños descansando, vigilados por pastores.

En medio de este divino silencio nocturno, de pronto se apareció a los pastores el Ángel del Señor envuelto en una resplandeciente luz y dijo: "¡No temáis! Porque he aquí os doy nuevas de gran gozo, que será para todo el pueblo: que os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, quien es Cristo el Señor. Esto os servirá de señal: hallaréis al niño envuelto en pañales, acostado en un pesebre." Inmediatamente después de esto se presentó una innumerable cantidad de Ángeles, que cantaban aquel maravilloso cántico, que aún hasta hoy en día toda la gente escucha con emoción. "Gloria a Dios en las alturas, y en la tierra paz, para con los hombres de buena voluntad" (Lucas 2:10-14).

Después que los Ángeles se alejaron, los pastores, volviendo en si, se apresuraron hacia el lugar que les había sido indicado, hacia la gruta, y entrando en ella, reverenciaron al Divino Niño. Cuando el Justo José escuchó de los pastores el relato acerca de la aparición de los Ángeles, se convenció, de que tanto la concepción, como el nacimiento del Niño de la Virgen María, era obra del Dios Todopoderoso, en cumplimiento de las antiguas profecías acerca de Mesías.

Según la tradición, la Virgen María con el Divino Niño y José pasaron en la gruta de Belén unos cuarenta días. Fue allí mismo, que al octavo día después del nacimiento, realizaron sobre el Niño el rito de la circuncisión, en cumplimiento de lo establecido por la Ley, dándole el nombre de Jesús, según el mandato del Arcángel Gabriel.

El cálculo del calendario cristiano, que es aceptado por todas las naciones desarrolladas, debe su origen al monje romano del siglo 6-o, Dionisio el Menor. Según sus cómputos, el Nacimiento de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo sucedió en el año 754 después de la fundación de Roma. Sin embargo más adelante, Ideler, conocido astrónomo alemán (l846) contabilizó, que el Nacimiento de Jesucristo sucedió algo antes — en el 749 o 750 después de la fundación de Roma. Si tuviéramos en cuenta sus estudios, como más correctos, tendríamos que agregar al año en curso unos cuatro años más.

The star of light that shone forth suddenly beyond its nature is smaller than the sun yet greater than the sun; it was smaller in visible light, it was greater in hidden power because of its symbol.

The morning star shed its rays among the dark ones and led them like blind men. They came and received a great light.

They gave offerings and received life and worshipped and returned.

Above and below there were two harbingers for the Son: the star of light shouted out joyfully from above, and John proclaimed from below. Two harbingers: both and earthly one and a heavenly one.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. Our Holy Mother, the Martyr Eugenia, and those with her



The daughter of Philip, Eparch of all Egypt, she was born in Rome. At that time, the Christians had been driven out of Alexandria and were living outside the town. The maiden Eugenia visited the Christians and received their Faith with all her heart. She fled from her parents with her two faithful eunuchs, was baptised by Bishop Elias and, wearing man's clothing, went to a men's monastery where she received the monastic habit. She so purified her heart by voluntary asceticism that she received from God the gift of healing the sick, and thus healed a rich woman, Melanthia. After this, though, the woman conceived a physical passion for her, not suspecting that she was a woman. Being firmly repulsed by Eugenia, this wicked woman, out of revenge, went to the Eparch and slandered her just as Potiphar's wife had slandered chaste Joseph. The eparch ordered that all the monks be bound and thrown into prison together with Eugenia. When they were brought out for trial, Eugenia revealed herself to her father as his daughter. The overjoyed Philip was baptised, with his whole household, and Philip was chosen as Bishop of Alexandria. Hearing of this, the Roman Emperor sent a wicked general, Terence, who, coming to Alexandria, secretly killed Philip. Then St Eugenia moved to Rome with her mother and brothers. In Rome, she fearlessly and zealously brought pagans to the true Faith, especially maidens, and thus brought a beautiful maiden, VassiIia, to the Faith. Vassilia was quickly beheaded for Christ, as Eugenia had foretold to her, and then her two eunuchs, Protus and Hyacinthus, were beheaded. Finally, martyrdom came to Eugenia, whose presence had caused the Temple of Diana to fall in ruins. The torturers first threw her into water and then into fire, but God preserved her. The Lord Jesus Himself appeared to her in the prison and told her that she would suffer on the day of His Nativity. And so it came about. She was beheaded with the sword on December 25th, 262, in Rome. After her death, Eugenia appeared to her mother in great glory, and comforted her.

The Ten Holy Martyrs of Crete


They suffered for Christ the Lord during Decius's persecution, in the year 250. Their names were: Theodulus, Satuminus, Euporus, Gelasius, Eunician, Zoticus,Pompey, Agathopous, Basilides and Evaristus. They were all honoured and eminent citizens, the cream of the cream. When they were taken to the scaffold, they were filled with joy and discussed among themselves who would be the first to be beheaded,because each wanted to be the first to go to his beloved Christ. 'Men they prayed: 'O Lord, forgive Thy servants and accept our outpoured blood on our own behalf and that of our kinsfolk and friends and all our fatherland, that all may be released from the darkness of ignorance and come to know Thee, the true light, O eternal King!'They were beheaded and entered into the Kingdom of glory, to eternal rejoicing.

St Niphon the Wonderworker



Born in Paphlagonia, he was brought up in Constantinople at the court of a great commander. Falling into low company, the young Niphon became dissolute and gave himself to great sin and vice. Because of his sin, he could not even pray to God. By the mercy of the most holy Mother of God, he was brought back to the way of righteousness and became a monk. He had innumerable visions of the heavenly world and waged a four-year war with the demons, who whispered to him incessantly: 'There is no God! There is no God!', but, when the Lord Jesus Himself appeared to him alive on an icon, Niphon received great power over the evil spirits and was freed from these heavy temptations. He had such insight that he saw angels and demons around men as clearly as he saw the people themselves, and he could discern men's thoughts. He often spoke with angels and disputed with demons. He built a church to the most holy Mother of God in Constantinople, gathered many monks together and saved many souls. Alexander, the Archbishop of Alexandria, through a heavenly revelation, consecrated him bishop of the town of Constantia on Cyprus. Niphon was already old by that time, and, governing the Church of God well for a short period, entered into Christ's eternal Kingdom. St Athanasius the Great visited him at the time of his death, being then archdeacon of the church in Alexandria, and he saw Niphon's face shine like the sun.

Towards a Fruitful Spiritual Life:

Reasons Why Our Intentions to Lead a Better and Holy Life Do Not Produce Results

The first and foremost reason why our intention to correct ourselves and lead a holy life remains without result lies in the fact that our intention is often too vague and indefinite.

A certain sinner, for example, says to himself: "It's high time for me to stop sinning, time to mend my ways ! I repent! I'll stop sinning!" The intention is quite indefinite. And because of this, although it might be sincere, it is unreliable and may not achieve the desired correction. He who has a sincere desire to amend himself must first of all determine exactly what it is that must be corrected. He must determine what is his greatest sin and what means he must use against it, and what dangers he must avoid so as not to fall into it again, since it has become a habit, a part of his life. All this thought and self-examination must come first and only then should a resolve be made, and that resolve should be specific as, for example: "Enough! with God's help I am no longer going to fall into such-and-such a sin; I'm going to break this bad habit; I'm no longer going to associate with those particular people who encourage me in this habit; I'm going to break off that unhealthy relationship; I'm going to use such-and-such means against this sin; I'm going to arm myself and muster all my forces against it when it begins again to tempt me."

The same thing must also be said about the resolution to lead a righteous life. By no means is it enough to content oneself simply by stating the following resolve: "From this time forth I'm going to lead a God-pleasing life." Such a resolution is not definite enough, and although it may have come from the heart, it is doubtful whether it will have any effect. He who desires to abandon a life of sin and live a righteous life must first of all examine which obligations he has most difficulty in fulfilling and does not like to fulfill; what exactly hinders their fulfillment; what he must do, what means he must employ to fulfill them more readily. Having done this, he must make a specific resolve, as for example: "Now, with God's help I will try hard to fulfill this obligation which until now I have done so poorly; I will apply myself to using such-and-such means towards its fulfillment. For example, when someone offends me I will be more patient; I won't start using insulting and shameful language, or better yet, I won't answer back at all; in such-and such company I'll be more careful in what I say; at such-and-such times I'll try to pray fervently, something I have not done up to now, and so on." In general, the more definite one's intention to change one's sinful life and live righteously, the more it will suit the particular circumstances, the state of one's soul, one's relationship with others, etc., and the more hope there is of its bringing it into reality. When something is so definite one can more easily direct one's thoughts and one's strength to one subject and thus, of course, more easily achieve the desired goal.

Another reason why our good intentions fail, is because we do not hold firmly enough to our resolve. Scarcely two or three days pass by after our having made our resolution and we, in our normal daily routine of life amidst our worldly cares and pursuits, have already forgotten our intention, although at the time it was made with proper firmness of purpose. For this reason, if we truly wish our good intention to be realized, then each of us, every morning after our morning prayers, must immediately bring to mind and renew our resolution, saying in our hearts: "I promised God to turn away from this particular sin; I really wanted to fulfill this obligation; I must keep my promise!" Having renewed in this way our good intention, we must diligently pray to God that He would grant us the necessary strength to carry it out. Likewise, our intention must be renewed in this way throughout the course of the day. And when evening comes, we should never go to sleep without having first examined our hearts to see how we have spent the day: did we keep our promise to God?

And if it happens that we went against our resolve, against our promise, then we must immediately ask God's forgiveness, and once again renew our resolve and carefully watch over ourselves*. In such a way do those people act who are concerned for the salvation of their souls, and in this way they attain salvation!

The third reason we fail in our intention to lead a better life, is our excessive fear of the difficulties connected with such an undertaking. A holy life is not attained without work, without sufferings and difficulties; it often takes a prolonged and fierce battle. We must withdraw from occasions to sin, of which there are so many. We must sacrifice various enjoyments which are so pleasant, abandon many worldly pursuits which make life interesting, and endure many unpleasant things which because of our self-love are often so difficult to bear. For example, we resolved to withdraw from our natural inclination to become angry. In order to turn away from anger we must quietly endure a lot of what is to us almost unbearable, and to which our usual response would have been a stream of crude words; sometimes we must not justify ourselves even when we are in the right; often we must be silent when we feel the urge to speak; often we must give in to others even when the occasion does not demand it; we must often bear the offenses of others and not reveal our irritation; often force ourselves to patiently endure when we are slandered or laughed at like fools and cowards. All this we must endure if we truly desire to realize our intention to withdraw from anger.

Amidst all the difficulties of keeping oneself from anger or any other sin which manifests itself as particularly great, our soul often falls into despondency and all our strength seems to evaporate. In such cases we must immediately bring to mind various sacred truths and experiences which are able to restore our former spirit, our former strength, and give us hope of abandoning the sin from which we decided to turn away. Thus we must remember that no matter how weak a man is, with God's help he can do and endure all things if only he truly desires it and uses the strength which he is given by God. We must remember the millions of righteous ones who
have gone before us and their self-denial, patience and endurance which they left as an example for us and for the whole world, we must remember that above all God desires our correction, and because of this, knowing our weakness and our needs, He will unfailingly come to our aid if only we turn to Him with fervent prayer and make use of the means and the power which He has given to us. We must remember that the difficulties which invariably accompany any important undertaking are intimidating only to the lazy and faint-hearted; that only the first steps along the path of correction are unpleasant and difficult; that the farther one goes along
such a path the easier and less painful it becomes; that any victory which we gain over our enemy makes us much stronger and better able to endure any further onslaughts. We must more often remind ourselves of the feeling of peace and satisfaction we shall experience when in the last days and hours of our life we look back at our past, at the difficulties we have heroically overcome, at the many sufferings borne with Christian patience, at the countless temptations conquered by our love for God, at all the noble deeds which we performed in secret before God's eyes alone, at all the favors which we showed our fellow man, at the faithfulness with which we fulfilled our obligations, often forcing ourselves to the utmost to do this. Finally, we must more often remind ourselves that for all this we will be rewarded by so much in the life of the age to come that all the difficulties which we over come here in this life, all the sufferings which we endure in this age for the sake of a righteous life, will appear to us much smaller, in fact, insignificant, in comparison with the heavenly rewards. O, Almighty God! Now we count each minute of trial and suffering and we rarely consider the blessed eternity which delights the souls of Thy righteous and faithful servants. Brother! In your striving towards a God-pleasing life, when you weigh your earthly difficulties and griefs, place more often on the scale this eternity! It will outweigh all your trials, all the pleasures of worldly pursuits, pleasures and enjoyments.

The fourth reason that our resolution to lead a better life often fails, lies in the fact that we want immediately to become saints. Many people, when they once feel an aversion to their sinful behaviour, make a firm resolve to change their ways and place a good beginning towards this reform; but because this doesn't happen as quickly as they would like, and whether by habit or rashness they often fall into their old sins, they lose heart and come to the conclusion that it's impossible for them to change their ways.

Brother! Sister! People don't become saints overnight, Our old man does not easily yield to being transformed into the new man. A big tree is not felled by a single stroke of the ax. So it is with each evil passion which' is so firmly rooted in us. The .way to perfection or to spiritual maturity, is almost always unnoticeable, just as are so many things in nature. A spiritual man passes through various stages of growth, just like the physical man. Much time is spent in childhood before reaching the fullness and strength of manhood. There is a long period of weakness, and only then does one become stronger and stronger, until finally one becomes a man.

Only at this age is one capable of doing what is proper to amah. Likewise, a ripened ear of corn is at first only a seed, then a small blade of grass, then a stalk, and finally an ear of corn; but even this ear is not ripe all at once, but grows, then flowers, then it tassels and only then does it become ripe. The same is true of a righteous, life! Even the best man in the world does not suddenly become a saint. His perfection for the most part develops slowly and only little by little. Good earth which accepts into itself a good seed brings forth fruit, says the Lord, in
patience (Lk. 8:15). To fall, of course, is not good, and it were better not to; but he who falls and then quickly gets up, becomes wiser and more careful, renews his good intention, fervently prays to God for new strength to attain a righteous life. Fails are not such a hindrance for such a man on the path to perfection. At the time of his fall he even gains strength (Sirach 3:31) and like the Apostle Paul, strikes ahead towards the mark of the prize of the high Calling, forgetting those things which are behind (Phil. 3: 13-14).

Here, then, are some of the reasons why our good intentions to turn away from sin and lead a better life are often unfulfilled. Let us avoid these pitfalls; let us try to make our resolution as definite as possible; let us remember more often and continually renew our decision, and let us not become faint-hearted if we do not at once reach perfection, but let us courageously surmount the difficulties we meet along the way in firm hope of God's help.

The Glorious Martyr of Christ, Anastasia the Deliverer from Potions was a Roman by birth. She suffered for Christ during the time of Diocletian's persecution of the Church (284 – 305 A.D.). She was a most comely, wealthy and virtuous maiden who was nurtured in the Faith by her pious mother, Fausta. Her father, Praepexatus, was a pagan. Saint Anastasia's teacher in her youth was an educated and pious Christian named Chrysogonos. After the repose of her mother, her father forced Saint Anastasia to marry a pagan named Publius Patricius, who was prodigal in life. The blessed one had a love of virginity and feigning illness preserved her virginity.

Saint Anastasia was also very compassionate. Clothing herself in the garb of a beggar, and accompanied by only one servant, at night she secretly visited the homes of the poor and brought them what was needed for their daily sustenance. The Holy one also visited the prisons where the martyrs of Christ were. She washed and kissed their wounds and paid ransom to the prison guards to loose the Martyrs from their chains. When her servant told Publius about everything, he subjected his wife to a beating and locked her up at home. She was not allowed to speak to anyone, not even her beloved teacher Chrysogonos.

Saint Anastasia then began to correspond secretly with her teacher Chrysogonos, who told the saint to be patient, to cleave to the Cross of Christ, and to accept the Lord's will. He also foretold the impending death of Publius in the sea. After a certain while Publius did indeed drown, as he was setting out with a delegation to Persia. After the death of her husband, Saint Anastasia began to distribute her property to the poor and suffering.

At that time, the Emperor Diocletian was informed that the Christians, who filled the prisons of Rome, endured unbelievable tortures through the prayers and efforts of Saint Chrysogonos. The emperor gave orders to kill all the martyrs in a single night and for Chrysogonos to be sent to him at Aquileia. Saint Anastasia followed her teacher at a distance.

The emperor interrogated Saint Chrysogonos personally and even promised to appoint him, Eparch of Rome, but he could not make him renounce his faith. Therefore, he commanded that the Saint be beheaded and thrown into the sea. The body and severed head of the holy martyr were carried to shore by the waves. There by Divine Providence, the relics were found by a presbyter named Zoilus who placed them in a coffer, and concealed them at his home.

Saint Chrysogonos appeared to Zoilus and informed him that martyrdom was at hand for three of his spiritual daughters, Agape, Chione and Irene (April 16). Saint Chrysogonos also told him that Saint Anastasia was coming to them to encourage them in their martyric struggle. Saint Chrysogonos foretold that Saint Zoilus would also fall asleep on the same day as the martyrdom of the three sisters. Nine days later, the words of Saint Chrysogonos were fulfilled. Saint Anastasia also saw the same vision and went to Saint Zoilus and the three maidens before their tortures. When Saint Zoilus fell asleep in the Lord and the three martyrs gave up their souls to the Lord, Saint Anastasia buried them.

Having carried out her teacher's request, the saint went from city to city ministering to Christian prisoners. Proficient in the medical arts of the time, she zealously cared for captives far and wide, healing their wounds and relieving their suffering. Because of her labours, Saint Anastasia received the name Deliverer from Potions (Pharmakolytria), since by her intercessions she has healed many from the effects of potions, poisons, and other harmful substances.

She made the acquaintance of the pious young widow Theodote, finding in her a faithful helper. Theodote was taken for questioning when it was learned that she was a Christian. Meanwhile, Saint Anastasia was arrested in Illyricum (Roman Province of Modern Albania and part of Serbia). This occurred just after all the Christian captives there had been martyred in a single night by order of Diocletian. Saint Anastasia had come to one of the prisons, and finding no one there, she began to weep loudly. The jailers realized that she was a Christian and took her to the governor of the district, who tried to persuade her to deny Christ by threatening her with torture. After his unsuccessful attempts to persuade Saint Anastasia to offer sacrifice to idols, he handed her over to the pagan priest Ulpian in Rome.

The cunning pagan offered Saint Anastasia the choice between luxury and riches or grievous sufferings. He set before her gold, precious stones and fine clothing, and also fearsome instruments of torture and told her to choose. The crafty man was put to shame by the bride of Christ. Saint Anastasia refused the riches and chose the tools of torture.

But the Lord prolonged the earthly life of the saint, and Ulpian gave her three days to reconsider. Charmed by Saint Anastasia's beauty, the pagan priest decided to defile her purity. However, when he tried to touch her he suddenly became blind. His head began to ache so severely that he screamed like a madman. He asked to be taken to a pagan temple to appeal to the idols for help, but on the way he fell down and died.

Saint Anastasia was set free and she and Saint Theodote again devoted themselves to the care of imprisoned Christians. Before long, Saint Theodote and her three sons received the crowns of martyrdom. Her eldest son, Saint Evodus, stood bravely before the judge and endured beatings without protest. After lengthy torture, they were all thrown into a red-hot oven.

Saint Anastasia was imprisoned again and condemned to death by starvation. She remained in prison without food for sixty days. Saint Theodote appeared to the martyr every night and gave her courage. Seeing that hunger caused Saint Anastasia no harm whatsoever, the judge sentenced her to drowning together with other prisoners. Among them was Saint Eutychianos, who was condemned for his Christian faith.

The prisoners were put onto a ship which went out into the open sea. The soldiers bored holes in the ship and got into a boat. Saint Theodote appeared to the captives and guided the ship to shore. When they reached dry land, 120 pagan men believed in Christ and were baptized by Saints Anastasia and Eutychianos. All were captured and received a martyr's crown. Saint Anastasia was stretched between four pillars and burned alive. She received the crown of martyrdom on Decemeber 22. A certain pious woman named Apollinaria buried her body, which was unharmed by the fire, in the garden outside her house.

In the fifth century the relics of Saint Anastasia were transferred to the imperial capital, Constantinople, where a church was built and dedicated to her. Later the head and one of her hands of the Great Martyr were transferred to the monastery of Saint Anastasia, Deliverer from Potions, near Thessaloniki, Greece. There as well in Constantinople many miracles took place.
