On Humility:
This seems a strange thing, for humility alone is opposite to vainglory, and it is from this, I suppose, that it guards a man. But a man grows angry over riches and what he has to eat; why then does he say that humility does not get angry, or provoke to anger? Humility is a great thing (as we keep on saying) and it is powerful to bring down grace to the soul. For the rest, the grace of God itself, coming into the soul, protects it from these other two grievous passions, for what is more grievous to a man than to grow angry and to anger his neighbor? As one of the Seniors says, "it is completely foreign to a monk to grow angry, unless he is swiftly protected by humiliating himself, in a short time, troubled as he is, and troubling others, he comes under the power of the devil.
For this reason he says that humility does not get angry or provoke to anger; but why am I saying that it protects from these two passions? In point of fact humility protects the soul from all passions and also from every temptation. When Blessed Anthony saw all the snares of the devil spread out everywhere, he sighed, and asked God how anyone could ever avoid them. God answered him, 'Humility. It is humility that enables you to escape them all!" And what is more astonishing, he added, "They cannot even touch you".
